Dear Colleagues:
During the 2018 holiday season, UC Merced will officially close for nine days beginning Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, through Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, and will reopen for business Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019. The closure period includes four paid holidays (Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1) and three “curtailment” days (Dec. 26, 27, 28).
In the spirit of collaboration, campus leadership sought feedback from Staff Assembly leadership, who agreed the dates were logical choices that afford our campus employees nine consecutive days of winter break.
Staff may choose to use accrued vacation time, compensatory time (if eligible) or leave without pay to cover the curtailment workdays during the closure period.
Many employees who do not have enough vacation or compensatory time accrued to cover the curtailment days are eligible to take vacation days in advance during the campus closure, in accordance with Personnel Policies for Staff Members 2.210, Absence from Work. For represented employees, curtailment days are handled according to existing contract provisions or collective bargaining, where applicable. Employees with questions regarding the campus closure should contact Employee and Labor Relations.
Some job functions are required even while campus is closed. We ask that employees and units who plan to work during the campus closure period do so in close communication with their governing vice chancellor. Departments planning to maintain operations during the campus closure period should also notify Facilities Management as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
UC Merced Human Resources
